Renault then and now

In 1899 three brothers, Louis, Marcel and Ferdinand Renault, established the Société Renault Frères. Louis focused on car design and production while the other brothers dealt with sales.

In the early years, the Renault brothers placed a strong emphasis on sports, especially motorsports. They believed this was a great way to promote their products. One of the brothers died during such a race, yet the company continued its active involvement in sports. After World War II Renault was nationalised due to allegations that Louis Renault had manufactured tanks for Nazi Germany.

In 1946, the 4CV model was launched - this came equipped with a two-litre, four-cylinder engine. The car was first shown to the public at the Paris Auto Show. The Renault 4CV competed effectively against the popular Volkswagen Beetle; by 1961 half a million cars were produced.

In 1972, the model 5 was presented. This small car proved very popular with drivers, gaining Renault more success. This was followed by the Renault 9 in 1981 and the executive car 25 in 1984. Subsequently, the firm achieved great success selling its early Clio (1990), Laguna (1994), Megane (1995) and Scenic (1996), many of which continue to be produced.

Today Renault is one of the best-selling brands in Europe. It is actually composed of five brands that form Groupe Renault: Renault, Dacia, Renault Samsung Motors, Alpine and Lada. This multinational auto manufacturer considers further growth into new markets. They aim to provide sustainable mobility with their electric, connected and autonomous vehicles.

Accolades

Since its early days, the company has been regarded as an innovative leader within the car industry. Renault presented its first sedan in 1899 and, in 1965, it released the Renault 16, the precursor of family cars. Automotive fans also emphasize that the Renault 16 was the world’s first hatchback. It was this car that also won the company its first Car of the Year award.

Renault models continue to be awarded by top industry magazine users in various categories: in 2016 Renault Kadjar became a gold winner of Autoexpress Driver Power survey, Renault Clio won the first prize in The Sun Motor Awards 2019 and received the Best Small Car award in the Carbuyer Car Awards 2020.

Back in 2019, Groupe Renault was named “Manufacturer of the Year” at TopGear.com annual awards ceremony.
