BMW then and now

The BMW brand denotes high standards and power performance - the German producer works closely with top automotive suppliers to ensure safety and quality of their products. Established in 1916, the BMW company (Bayerische Motoren Werke) has over 100-year experience in producing machinery. Its original goal was to manufacture aircraft engines but after the First World War they also started to produce railway brakes.

In 1928, BMW released its first car: the Dixi 3/15. Produced in their Eisenach factory, the car was powered with a four-cylinder engine with a 0.8 litre capacity and 15 horsepower. Despite its small engine, the car could reach speeds of up to 50 mph.

The Roadster 328 was first produced in 1936 and sported a 2-litre engine combined with 80 horsepower. At the time, this car was unbeatable on the famous Nurburgring race track and it was nominated for "Car of the Century." By 1951, BMW had further developed its technology, producing its popular 501 model. This was followed by the 1500 model in 1962, which performed well in various motorsport races, winning over middle class drivers.

The series 5 model was launched in 1972 and it was later joined by the series 3 and 7, which are still manufactured today. BMW also produced the series 6 model, designed to combine sport and luxury. At the turn of the century, BMW decided to start expanding into the sports and recreational car segments, releasing the X5 and X3 range of models.

Today the BMW Group is a leading manufacturer which releases premium cars under the brands they own, i.e. BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce. The Group also provides financial and mobility services.

Accolades

Since its early days, BMW has always been involved in motorsports. In 1982, BMW made its debut in Formula 1 and, just a year later, Nelson Piquet won the Formula 1 World Championship, driving a Brabham BMW BT52. BMW has been a key winner in motorsports and the most successful modification of a serial car - the BMW M3 - comes from the company in Munich.
