VW Polo

The Volkswagen Polo is a compact city car whose name evokes the prestige of an elite sport. First introduced in 1975, the Polo has remained in continuous production ever since. The original model was a twin of the Audi 50, designed with minimal equipment to keep costs low and make it accessible to a wider audience. By 1981, over 500,000 units had rolled off the production line in Wolfsburg. The second-generation Polo offered more features and a broader range of engines. In 1990, it received a facelift that gave it a more modern appearance. Four years later, the third-generation Volkswagen Polo debuted, built on the Seat Ibiza platform. This version included both hatchback and saloon variants (the Polo Classic), and a redesigned dashboard that improved interior space. A facelift followed in late 1999. In October 2001, the fourth-generation VW Polo was launched, again sharing its platform with the Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia. Early models resembled the smaller Volkswagen Lupo, but by 2005, the design aligned more closely with Volkswagen’s higher-end models. A major milestone came in 2009 with the release of the final VW Polo 9N models—highly popular city cars across Europe. Their widespread appeal ensured that tyres and spare parts for the VW Polo 9N remain readily available. That same year, Volkswagen unveiled the all-new Polo at the Geneva Motor Show. Featuring a completely redesigned look inspired by the Volkswagen Design DNA, the new Polo echoed the styling of the latest VW Golf and Scirocco. It went on to win the prestigious Car of the Year 2010 award.
