The Volvo XC90 is a Segment I passenger vehicle and the first SUV in Volvo's history. It has been in production since 2002 at Volvo's manufacturing facility in Torslanda, Sweden. Built on the P2x platform—also used in other Volvo models such as the S60, V70, and S80—the XC90 offers a blend of performance, comfort, and safety.
Engine options include four petrol variants: 2.5 R5 Turbo with 210 hp, 2.9 R6 Turbo with 272 hp, 3.2 R6 with 238 or 243 hp, and a 4.4 V8 delivering 315 hp. There is also a diesel option: the 2.4 D, available with either 163 or 185 hp. Power is transmitted through a five- or six-speed manual gearbox, with four-, five-, and six-speed automatic transmissions also available.
One of the XC90’s standout features is its spacious and comfortable interior, accommodating up to seven passengers. Its reputation for safety is supported by advanced technologies such as ABL (Active Bending Lights), DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control), ABS, EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), and collision mitigation systems including SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), ROPS (Roll-Over Protection System), and WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System).
The XC90 received its first facelift in 2004, featuring updated headlights and a more refined interior. A second update followed in 2006, introducing subtle design enhancements, a new 3.2-litre petrol engine, and a more powerful Sport version.
Today, the Volvo XC90 remains one of the brand’s best-selling models. By 2005, 85,994 units had been sold, with strong popularity in the United States. In 2003, it was awarded the North American Truck of the Year and named Sport/Utility of the Year by Motor Trend magazine.
The original tyre sizes for the Volvo XC90, depending on the engine variant, are: 225/70 R16, 235/65 R17, and 235/60 R18. Optional tyre sizes include 255/50 R19 and 265/45 R20.
