Renault Clio

The Renault Clio is a B-segment passenger car produced by the French manufacturer Renault. Its first generation debuted in 1990 as the successor to the iconic Renault 5. The name "Clio" is inspired by the Greek muse of history. Initially offered as a hatchback, this compact city car quickly gained popularity and was awarded the prestigious title of "Car of the Year 1991". In 1994, the Clio underwent its first update, receiving a redesigned radiator grille, new side mouldings, updated rear lights, and revised exterior mirrors. Safety enhancements were also introduced, including pyrotechnic seatbelt pretensioners. A more significant facelift followed in 1996, which notably transformed the front-end design. Over 4 million units of the first-generation Clio were produced. The second generation was launched in spring 1998, featuring a completely new and modern design. Initially available as a hatchback, a saloon version was added in 2001, marketed under different names depending on the region: Renault Clio Symbol, Renault Clio Sedan, or Renault Thalia. That same year, the model received a major update, known as "Phase 2", which included changes to the front fascia, rear lights, bumpers, and interior details. A standout variant was the sporty Clio 2, equipped with 185/55 R15 tyres to handle the power of its 2.0-litre, 172 hp engine. The third-generation Renault Clio made its world premiere at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. Initially offered in three- and five-door hatchback versions, a station wagon variant called the Clio Grandtour was later introduced. The engine lineup included a wide range of petrol options, delivering between 65 and 197 hp, as well as two 1.5 dCi diesel variants with 68 and 86 hp. In 2012, the fourth-generation Clio (Clio IV) was launched, followed by the fifth generation (Clio V) in 2019.
