Mercedes S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a premium luxury sedan positioned in the F-segment. The "S" stands for "Sonderklasse," which translates from German as "special class." The S-Class is exclusively available as a saloon, offered in both standard and long-wheelbase (L) versions, with the extended version providing increased rear passenger space and overall vehicle length. The first generation of the S-Class debuted in 1972 as the Mercedes-Benz W116. It was produced solely as a saloon, although a station wagon prototype was developed but never entered production. The flagship variant featured air suspension for superior ride comfort and was powered by a 6.9-litre engine. In 1979, the W116 was succeeded by the W126. This new generation introduced a more aerodynamic design, integrated moldings, and concealed windshield wipers, which contributed to a reduced drag coefficient. In 1981, the lineup expanded with the introduction of the 126C coupé, offering enhanced luxury features such as electric windows, powered front seats with headrests, central locking, and even an integrated telephone. Leather upholstery and a refined dashboard were standard in many versions. The third generation, the W140, launched in 1991, was a significant leap forward in terms of comfort and innovation. With a development cost of approximately one billion dollars, it featured extensive sound insulation and 10 mm thick windows, delivering exceptional cabin quietness. In 1998, the W140 was replaced by the W220. This model was more compact and lighter, resulting in improved fuel efficiency. It also showcased a sleeker, more modern design. The W221, introduced in 2005, is the latest generation mentioned here. It continued the tradition of innovation, luxury, and performance that defines the S-Class.
