The Audi A4 is a premium mid-size car produced by the German manufacturer Audi. The first generation, known as the B5, was introduced in 1994 and was built on the PL45 platform, shared with the VW Passat B5. Audi offered a wide range of petrol engines, from 1.6 to 2.8 litres, and diesel engines with 1.9 and 2.5-litre capacities. A 1.8 Turbo engine was later added, available in 150 hp and 180 hp variants. It was also the first Audi model to feature a Tiptronic automatic transmission as standard.
During the B5’s seven-year production run, two facelifts were introduced—in 1997 and 1999. A high-performance S4 version with 265 hp was also launched. However, the most powerful variant was the RS4 Avant, developed in collaboration with Cosworth, delivering an impressive 379 hp and earning the title of the fastest estate car of its time.
The second generation, the B6, debuted in 2000. It featured a larger body and was built on the new PL46 platform. The updated suspension significantly improved handling and driving dynamics. The S4 version of the B6 came equipped with a 4.2-litre V8 engine producing 344 hp. This generation also introduced the Multitronic CVT gearbox, developed by LUK.
In late 2004, Audi launched the third generation, the B7. Although it shared the same platform and suspension as the B6, the B7 featured redesigned exterior styling and a refreshed interior. The engine lineup expanded to include the 2.0 TFSI, 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI, and 3.0 TDI units.
The current generation, the B8, is the largest Audi A4 to date. It not only surpasses its predecessor in size but also outclasses key rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series in terms of dimensions.
