The Audi A3 is a compact car produced by the German automaker Audi. The first-generation model, introduced in 1996, was built on the platform of the fourth-generation Volkswagen Golf. Initially launched as a three-door hatchback, a five-door version followed in 1999. A minor facelift was introduced in 2000.
The first-generation A3 was offered with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. The base petrol engine was a 1.6-litre unit producing 101 hp. More powerful 1.8-litre 20-valve engines were also available, delivering 125 hp in the naturally aspirated version and between 150 and 225 hp in the turbocharged variants. The most powerful 1.8 Turbo engine, generating 225 hp, was exclusive to the sporty S3 version, which also featured quattro all-wheel drive with a Haldex coupling system.
The first-generation Audi A3 was available in four trim levels. The base trim, Attraction, featured a four-spoke steering wheel, Fabula upholstery, and 15-inch alloy wheels. The Ambition trim offered a sportier feel with a three-spoke steering wheel, lowered suspension, and additional features. The Ambiente trim focused on comfort, offering a leather steering wheel and velour upholstery. An optional S line sports package was also available.
In 2003, Audi introduced the second-generation A3, built on the Volkswagen PQ35 platform shared with the Golf V and Touran. The five-door version, named the A3 Sportback, debuted in 2004. It was slightly longer than the three-door model and offered increased luggage capacity. In 2006, Audi launched the high-performance S3 variant, powered by a 2.0 TFSI engine producing 265 hp. The second-generation A3 received a facelift in 2008, and in 2007, a convertible version was added to the lineup. The updated model featured headlights inspired by the Audi A5.
For the first-generation Audi A3 8L, the standard tyre size for both winter and factory-fitted summer tyres was 195/65 R15. In the second-generation Audi A3 8P, the most common tyre size was 205/55 R16.
