Test results for summer tyres 2019

The most recommended

This year's tests have been dominated by tyres in sizes exceeding 200 mm in width. This may be the result of the ever-increasing popularity of larger cars, especially SUVs, or smaller but powerful engines. It is also worth noting that among the best products there were mainly models classified in the so-called premium segment.

Two models made their presence felt in the research in a special way, gaining only high positions. We're talking about tyres: Continental PremiumContact 6 and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5.

Continental PremiumContact 6

The proposal from the German manufacturer stood out from the competition, landing on the podium in as many as five tests. It was equally well evaluated by AutoBild, who placed the car in 5th place, at the same time giving it the highest - exemplary - score and the title of "Eco-meister".

Continental PremiumContact 6 is the result of many years of German engineering. They have succeeded in developing tyres that make high performance available to every driver. It is characterized by excellent grip, handling and comfort, even with a dynamic driving style.

The key to success is the use of a polymer blend with the addition of silicon crystals. It increases durability, shortens braking distances and reduces rolling resistance. The asymmetrical tread and refined design are also important. The experts on this tyre were unanimous in their opinion that it was safe and recommendable.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5

This model appeared on the podium for all the tests in which it took part, and this time it was declared the winner (in the AutoBild Allrad ranking). Like the Continental proposal, the tyre was awarded the "Eco-meister" title.

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 represents the Ultra High Performance segment for high performance cars. It offers the highest level of performance. The award-winning tyres proved to be the perfect choice for summer products.

The tyres earned high marks for their wet braking performance. This is essential for a safe and secure ride in rainy weather. The model also performs well on dry roads. The tyre's noise level is optimal and the comfort is high.

Surprising ADAC test results

The results of the tests carried out by the German automobile club ADAC are among the most awaited by the drivers. With more than a century of activity and commitment to road transport safety, this research is considered to be one of the most reliable. This time the ADAC took a closer look at the sizes 185/65 R15 and 215/65 R16 (for larger and heavier cars).

The best tyres in size 185/65 R15 according to ADAC:

1st place: Bridgestone Turanza T005 (good)

2nd place: Vredestein Sportrac 5 (good)

3rd place: Michelin Crossclimate+ (satisfactory)

The premium class tyres proved to be unrivalled in 185/65 R15 size. The first place was taken by Bridgestone Turanza T005, which is one of the newer proposals of the Japanese manufacturer. The model performed best in dry and wet conditions. Just behind him was a real test veteran - the Vredestein Sportrac 5, which is perfectly suited to the water-covered road. The podium is completed by Michelin Crossclimate+, the year-round highly wear-resistant.

Bridgestone Turanza T005 is the next instalment in a popular tourist tyre series. The manufacturer has refined the rubber compound and tyre structure to provide greater safety, comfort and economy.

Best tyre size 215/65 R16 according to ADAC:

1st place: Apollo Altrust (satisfactory)

2nd place: Goodyear EfficientGrip Cargo (satisfactory)

3rd place: Pirelli Carrier (satisfactory)

Slightly more surprising were the tyre scores of 215/65 R16. In this case, the economical Apollo Altrust was the winner. It turns out that its manufacturer has a lot of experience in designing products for delivery vans. The winning tyres were appreciated for their excellent dry-weather performance, durability and fuel economy.

Second place goes to the Goodyear EfficientGrip Cargo, which features outstanding dry grip and low rolling resistance. Pirelli Carrier came in third.

ACE and GTÜ distinguish premium brands

The best tyres in size 205/55 R16 according to ACE/GTÜ:

1st place: Nokian Wetproof (highly recommended)

2nd place: Dunlop SP Sport BluResponse (highly recommended)

3rd place: Continental PremiumContact 6th (highly recommended)

This year, the ACE automobile club, in cooperation with GTÜ, the German Technical Supervisory Association, has failed to take into account the lower-than-premium class of tyres when carrying out the test. This is the result of experience gained in previous years, when economic solutions were difficult to compete with the latest technologies.

The chosen size is also not accidental, 205/55 R16 was considered as a point of reference for the development of producers. The most refined tyre was the new Nokian Wetproof. This time, the Finns showed that it is not only wintering that is their strength. This model was unsurpassed in the wet and had a balanced performance.

Just behind him was Dunlop SP Sport BluResponse, which appeared in the tests regularly for several years. On dry roads it achieved better results than its Finnish competitor. Third place went to the Continental PremiumContact 6. Fourth place went to Bridgestone Turanza T005, which scored just 3 points less than the winner (with a scale of 0-190 points).

Nokian Wetproof is designed to provide excellent dry performance and maximum safety in the event of rain. With solutions such as safety zones, self-locking grooves and Aqua Hybrid, you can drive safely and steadily, even in adverse weather conditions.

The third place went to the economical Maxxis Premitra HP5 tyres, which have already been awarded many times in tests. They did an excellent job, especially on wet roads.

The second place went to Michelin, a French company with the Primacy 4, which had no equal in terms of rolling resistance. Auto Zeitung magazine named the Continental PremiumContact 6 the winner.

The Maxxis Premitra HP 5 is a budget tyre designed in the spirit of High Performance. Although it is available at an attractive price, its quality is not inferior to more expensive offers. The designers focused on the best possible stability and grip when driving at high speed.

AutoBild Sportcars

Best tyre size 245/45 R18 according to AutoBild Sportcars:

1st place: Pirelli P Zero PZ4 (exemplary)

2nd place: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 (exemplary)

3rd place: Continental PremiumContact 6 (exemplary)

Owners of sports cars with capabilities that are hard to find in small city cars, require a little more from tyres. Otherwise, their safety could be compromised during dynamic driving. What were the best models in 245/45 R18 size?

For the first time in our ranking a representative of the Pirelli brand, the P Zero PZ4 model, appears, immediately taking the title of the test winner. What is important, the magazine did not notice any weaknesses of the model! Just behind it were the models from Goodyear and Continental. Michelin Pilot Sport4 and Vredestein Ultrac Vorti were placed on further positions, but still with an exemplary note.

What model do Sport Auto and Gute Fahrt recommend?

Best tyre size 245/30 R20 according to Sport Auto:

1st place: Continental SportContact 6th (highly recommended)

2nd place: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (recommended)

3rd place: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 (conditionally recommended)

Staying on the subject of sports solutions, we reach for the opinion of specialists from Sport Auto magazine, who looked at the size of the largest diameter - 245/30 R20. Tests of Ultra High Performance models in this case have yielded interesting results.

Out of eight proposals, only two received full recommendations. The Continental SportContact 6 tyres were considered highly recommended, and the title of "recommended" was awarded to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. Both of these positions showed perfect braking performance. At the same time, they were criticised for their poor driving comfort.

Although Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 was also on the podium, his overall rating is "conditionally recommended".

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is not without reason fitted as original equipment in cars such as Ferrari and Mercedes. It is manufactured using solutions successfully used in motorsport, and tests were conducted on Formula 1 tracks. This model is definitely intended for drivers who prefer fast driving.
