Nokian – successor better than predecessor?

The first place was taken by one of the latest proposals by the Finnish Nokian, which is WR D4. The model uses a range of high-tech solutions which translate into very good performance. Its label presents the A class in braking on a wet surface.

Its predecessor, Nokian WR D3, is also ranked very high. It also features solutions that considerably improve the safety of travel, reduce fuel consumption and increase comfort. It is worth knowing that Nokian was the first company to offer winter tyres. Today their products undergo strict test on the racetrack called “The Ice Hell”, located in Ivalo, Lapland. In extreme conditions, the Nokian tyres have to show their strengths to ensure stable and comfortable driving.

The opinions on the Nokian winter tyres are very favourable. The reviews concerning WR D4 contain the following arguments: “calm and smooth drive”, “excellent value for money”, “they perform very well on a slippery surface, no problem with starting, ice or snow, they bite into with ease”, “fuel consumption is much lower”.

The reviews about Nokian WR D3 look similar: “when going out of the motorway by a loop covered with tamped snow, you can easily go just like in summer on a dry road”, “they don’t squeal even during sudden starts, don’t make noise at high speeds, maintain excellent grip in virtually all conditions – a very good value for money”.

Continental still among the leaders

According to drivers, Nokian WR D4 is not much better than Continental ContiWinterContact TS850. The tyre of the German manufacturer is considered one of the top winter tyres. In the 205/55 R16 size, the average drivers’ rating is 5.35, so close to perfection. But this is not all – it is one of the winter tyres that get the most awards in tests. The recognition both from the drivers and professional testers cannot be just a coincident. In Continental tyres, you will find the prove of the slogans regarding “the German quality and manufacturing precision”.

Continental stands for tyres that ensure security in winter conditions. In the reviews, we can read that “when in contact with snow, no problems; slush – just like on tracks; wet roadway – no aquaplanning; good braking distance, the drive suddenly became quiet and smooth. And it stayed so even in the lowest temperatures this winter”, “When others were digging themselves on the road, I was just calmly and smoothly driving on”.

Goodyear does not ease off on their competitors

Very high ratings are given to Goodyear UltraGrip 8 and Goodyear Ultragrip 9. UltraGrip is one of the winter tyre batches with the longest period of development. Each subsequent model features technologies that make the tyres still better. No surprise the drivers rate them so high. The first UltraGrip tyres appeared on the market in 1971.

The second generation, launched in 1980, received the first award in tests (its performance was appreciated by the specialists from “Auto Zeitung”). Presently, the most popular are the two latest generations: Goodyear UltraGrip 8 and Goodyear Ultragrip 9. These tyres also get awarded in different tests. The users of 205/55 R16 tyres rate them at 5.25 and 5.35.

In the reviews about UltraGrip 9, we can read that “they are very comfortable and perfectly stick to the asphalt, both dry and wet (I don’t evaluate them on snow, as in the area where I live there is no snow or ice so far)”, “I achieved a much lower fuel consumption than using summer tyres – a plus for the rolling resistance; water drainage from under the wheels is wonderful – absolutely stable performance on a wet surface”. On the other hand, the reviews on UltraGrip 8 are as follows: “it proves itself perfectly on any surface – you can trust it at any time – over 3,500 km travelled, in different conditions”.

Which tyres to buy?

The models mentioned in the rank are very similar in terms of quality, and each of them can be recommended. When looking for perfect winter tyres, pay attention also to the tyre tests published in the press and see how the presented models performed in different ranks.

The labels placed on the tyres are also worth your attention, though in the case of winter tyres they do not inform you on the snow or ice performance. If in doubt, contact our specialists, who will direct you to the model which best meets your expectations.
