Tyre Speed Rating

Speed index
Speed index determines the maximum speed allowed for the given type of tyres. It must match the specification of the vehicle’s producer and the load index. Both values are given on every tyre – please check the tyre sidewall markings. Click here to learn how to read tyre markings.

  • When using tyres with Q index you should not exceed a speed of 99 mph (160 kmh).
  • For VR category tyres the maximum load is provided for a speed of 130 mph (210 kmh).
  • For ZR category tyres, the maximum load is provided for a speed of 149 mph (240 kmh).
  • For tyres with V index, the load index should be reduced by 3% for every 6 mph (10 kmh) for speed range from 130 to 149 mph (210 to 240 kmh).
  • For tyres with W index, the load capacity should be reduced by 5% for every 6 mph (10 kmh) for speed range from 149 to 168 mph (240 to 270 kmh).
  • For tyres with Y index, the load capacity should be reduced by 5% for every 6 mph (10 kmh) for speed range from 168 to 186 mph (270 to 300 kmh).

Speed index

Speed index (SI) is one of the most important pieces of information on the sidewall (next to the size and load index). The load index is identified by a letter, A1–Y.

Speed index determines the maximum speed permitted for the given type of tyre. It must match the specification of the vehicle’s producer and the load index. Driving at a higher speed than the maximum indicated for the particular type of tyre may lead to a serious accident.

Fitting tyres with a lower speed index than is recommended by the manufacturer is not permitted. This applies in particular to summer tyres. Remember that the load index is carefully selected by the manufacturer. Please note that the speed index of the tyres you select cannot be more than 2 levels higher than recommended. If you change the load index, you must put an appropriate sticker of notification on your vehicle.

The table above shows the maximum speeds permitted for each SI rating.
