Si (speed index) - determines the maximum speed, allowed for the given type of tyres. It must match specification of the vehicle’s producer and load index. Both values are given on every tyre – please check tyre sidewall markings, to find out how to read them Tyre markings.

  • When using tyres with Q index you should not exceed the speed of 99 mph (160 kmh).
  • For VR category tyres the maximum load is provided for the speed of 130 mph (210 kmh).
  • For ZR category tyres, the maximum load is provided for the speed of 149 mph (240 kmh).
  • For tyres with V index, the load index should be reduced by 3% for every 6 mph (10 kmh) for speed range from 130 to 149 mph (210 to 240 kmh).
  • For tyres with W index, the load capacity should be reduced by 5% for every 6 mph (10 kmh) for speed range from 149 to 168 mph (240 to 270 kmh).
  • For tyres with Y index, the load capacity should be reduced by 5% for every 6 mph (10 kmh) for speed range from 168 to 186 mph (270 to 300 kmh).

Speed index

Speed index (SI) is one of the most important indformations on the side wall (next to the size and load index). The load index is marked by letter - A1-Y

Speed index determines the maximum speed, allowed for the given type of tyres. It must match specification of the vehicle’s producer and load index. Driving with the higher speed, than is marked on your tyre may lead to serious accident.

It is forbidden to fit tyre with the lower speed index, than it's recommended by the manufacturer. This rule refers, in particular to the summer tyres. Remember that load index is carefully selected by the manufacturer. ATTENTION! Speed index can not be higher than recommended more than 2 levels. When you are changing the load index, you should put on your car an appropriate sticker!
